Ethan’s Story
Ethan’s journey is one of resilience, growth and the power of a supportive community. With the unwavering love of his family and the dedicated staff at St Gabriel’s, Ethan has flourished - developing confidence, discovering new passions and embracing every opportunity that comes his way.
“Ethan has an intellectual disability, sensory processing disorder and a speech delay,” explains his mum, Keirilee. “He struggles with everyday tasks, including reading and writing, understanding instructions and effectively communicating his responses.” Despite these challenges, Ethan’s spirit shines brightly.
“He has a big heart, is kind and gentle, and loves playing jokes on his teachers and family. He always has a smile on his face.”
Ethan is in Year 8 at St Gabriel’s and he started at the school in Year 5. Since then, he has grown in confidence, ability and independence. “The staff are incredible and extremely supportive. They focus on helping students excel in their areas of strength, while providing exceptional support in areas where they face challenges."
One of Ethan’s greatest strengths is his love of sport. He started athletics and football young. Whilst it took some persistence to get through his first season of athletics, by the final week, he was hooked. Rugby League is also a big part of his life, especially with his dad as coach. He plays with several of his friends from school for the Hills Bulls, as part of the All Abilities Team.
Ethan has represented the school in athletics at a State level and was thrilled when he qualified to represent NSW at the National Athletic Championships in Perth this past April. He came away with a host of medals, including silver in the 1500 metres and bronze in the 800 metres.
St Gabriel’s has played an important role in fostering these passions.
“It’s a wonderful school. Ethan has grown to love it so much that, even when he's unwell, we've had to take him in just so a teacher can convince him to go back home! The dedicated staff actively encourage students to participate in all aspects of school life.”
“Our family is incredibly thankful for St Gabriel’s. The staff are not only dedicated but deeply committed to supporting and including every student. I am so grateful for the care and encouragement they provide."
