Shepherd’s Story
Sheppy is a joyful and cheeky 7-year-old boy, who loves music, library and being a big brother. He had his first seizure just moments after being born and required a hemispherectomy at age 3. At St Gabriel’s his family have found a place where he is supported, happy and developing new skills..
“Sheppy had a large left side MCA (middle cerebral artery) stroke in utero and at 3 months old was diagnosed with right side hemiplegia cerebral palsy,” explains his mum, Sarita. “At 3 years old, due to drug resistant epilepsy, the decision was made that he would undergo hemispherectomy surgery to remove the left side of his brain in hopes to stop the seizures. The surgery was a success, it has stopped the seizures, however it has come at a price. Sheppy has experienced significant cognitive regression since the surgery. He lost his ability to speak and his little spark has disappeared. It's been almost 4 years now since his surgery and it is only in the past 6 months I have seen a significant improvement in Sheppy. His personality has slowly started to come back, his social skills have improved and he has discovered his voice again, making noises all the time.”
“Sheppy is our amazing little warrior. He continues to defy the odds living life with literally half a brain, but he still faces numerous challenges daily.
Shepherd has a visual diagnosis of right hemianopia, he has right side paralysis and is non verbal. As Sheppy is non verbal he can become frustrated quickly when his needs are not met. His teachers at
St Gabriel’s have supported and encouraged him with his communication and the use of his AAC device.“
“I truly believe that being at school, being surrounded by his friends and having supportive teachers has made Sheppy progress like we have never seen before.
Like any parent we wanted to find the right school for our son and one that would support his needs. Not only academically and spiritually, but also physically and visually (as he has right side hemianopia). When we met the staff at St Gabriel's, we knew we found the right place for him. We have found a huge difference in Sheppy, in particular this year as he moved into Year 1. He has progressed so much in his listening, social and handwriting skills thanks to his teachers at St Gabriel’s who continue to support him. Sheppy loves attending school and enjoys playing with his friends.”
